Want to have a new companion at home! Be sure to read the information below. Find out why it is important to adopt a pet from a local animal rescue.
Did you know that animals from rescue shelters:
1. Have seen a veterinarian to be treated for any health issues,
2. Are up to date on all shots,
3. Usually have microchips,
4. Have been in foster care home for evaluation for temperament, training, habits, and house breaking.

Almost 40% of animals that come to the shelter are purebred.
These animals need you. This is your opportunity to rescue an animal. Almost 50% of the animals that come to the shelter are not strays, but are abandoned as a result of families moving, passing of elderly owners, or families who become unable to take care of the animal.
You may even look about adopting a senior pet. There are many reasons why a "senior" is a good idea. American Brittany Rescue has a very good page about senior animals and why you may rather have a senior instead of that cute little puppy. Visit their senior page! It is very good.

WHY SPAY OR NEUTER?

* Over 56% of dogs and puppies entering shelters are killed. * Over 71% of cats and kittens entering shelters are killed. * $2 billion of U.S. tax-payer money is spent on rounding up, housing, killing and disposing of homeless animals. * Two unaltered cats and their unaltered offspring can produce 420,000 cats in just 7 years. * Two unaltered dogs and their unaltered offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in just 6 years. * 25-40% of shelter animals are purebreds. * For every puppy or kitten bred or bought by a breeder, an animal awaiting adoption at a shelter will die.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF SPAYING/NEUTERING YOUR PET

* Spayed/neutered pets live longer, healther lives. * Spaying female dogs/cats eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the chance of breast cancer. * Neutering dogs/cats eliminates the possibility of testicular cancer and considerably reduces the chance of prostate cancer - enlargement of the prostate gland affects over 60% of unneutered dogs over the age of 5 yrs. * Spaying/neutering often eliminates undesirable behaviors such as aggression, spraying and roaming.

Over 65,000 dogs and cats are euthanized in the KC area alone every year simply because there are not enough homes for them all.

WHY ADOPT A PET?

Shelters and other rescue organizations have all shapes and sizes of mutts, purebreds, puppies and kittens, short hair pets or long hair pets, energetic animals or mellow animals. Your chances of finding a wonderful companion who matches your lifestyle, family and home are also much better. Shelter workers and rescuers are familiar witht the personality and temperament of each animal allowing them to match adopters with the best pet for them. More importantly, when you adopt a pet you save a life. The sad reality is that over 65,000 dogs and cats are euthanized in the KC area alone every year simply because there are not enough homes for them all. The fact that healthy, sweet, adoptable cats, dogs, puppies and kittens are killed every day in our coomunities is an inexcusible travesty. For every animal that is bought from a pet store or breeder, an animal awaiting adoption at a shelter will die.
